The 3rd Servas East Asia Online Meeting, held at 2:00 pm Taipei time on May 28, 2022, attracted nearly 100 members from 28 countries on five continents to join. Anastasiya, a Ukrainian member evacuating to Japan, also attended the meeting. Since the participants had been informed one Ukrainian member will join the meeting, the Ukrainian flag and the logo of “I stand with Ukraine” could be seen everywhere, which bring love and peace to all.
Before introducing Taiwan's Hakka culture, Serena, who has 43 years of membership in Servas and is also the first chairman of Servas Taiwan, said that she saw more and more exchanges and cooperation between Taiwan, East Asia, and even countries around the world, love and caring, it's very exciting, that's the spirit of Servas. She said that after the epidemic, everyone is welcome to Taiwan, "We have always had a tradition that as long as foreign members come to Taiwan to contact me, I will gather Taiwan members to have lunch or dinner with this Traveler. We will know this traveler and help to solve problems in his/her journey in Taiwan.”
The Taiwan’s Hakka culture that followed, after Jojo, the new chairman of Servas Taiwan, introduced Taiwan, members Milly, Yiping, Birdy told their personal stories, let participants see Hakka villages, wedding customs, Hakka cuisine, temple festivals, and the process from conflict at the beginning to peaceful coexistence with the Holo ethnic group and aboriginal people after Hakka immigrated to Taiwan. Yiping demonstrated how to cook rice pudding, one Hakka dish. It’s her way to miss her grandmother. She also invited her mother to taste “the flavor of mother”.
Many members said this was their first time to hear Hakka culture, which opened their eyes. One German member said she was very touched to see Milly's children join and produce traditional food, pull radishes, dry radishes, and make dried radishes with adults. One Mexican member said that the Hakka culture was so amazing that she wanted to fly to Taiwan immediately.
Mei, the meeting host and area coordinator of Servas East Asia, said new immigrants to their new hometowns must be difficult at the beginning. Hope the stories and spirit of Hakka will give power and hope to new immigrants of the world.

About Anastasiya from Ukraine Anastasiya, 29 years old, student & translator, speaks English and Polish fluently. She used to live in Lviv (west of Ukraine), now evacuated to Kyoto, Japan. She went to Poland and Germany in the beginning, but she left because no jobs or job offering was difficult to support her living. Under this situation, she received an invitation email from Wada Hiroko san, Servas Japan member. They met in 2018 when Anastasiya traveled to Kyoto. Anastasiya arrived in Japan in April and expects to find a job and starts working from June. “I am living off my Ukrainian savings right now as well as support from Hiroko san. I am extremely thankful for her help and all the support she gave me. I can truly say that she is my Japanese mother.”
Anastasiya’s family is still in Lviv, Ukraine. Her grandmother doesn’t want to leave. Her aunt is a nurse, and she said she cannot and will not leave. Her mother is helping refugees and the Ukrainian army. Her boyfriend also stays in Ukraine.
What she wants to tell Servas members worldwide is “Please support Ukraine! This small sentence holds so many hopes, feelings and tragedies that are taking place right now in my home country. Peace is not something you get for granted, peace is something you fight for. Only now do I understand.”
Supporting Ukrainian members, their emails can be found on Servas Online. Actions such as warm care or sponsorship will make them forward.

Happy seasonal greeting to you all. We do hope that you and your love ones are well and healthy.
Covid-19 is still preventing most of us from traveling. So, while trying to see how Servas can still be active, we East Asia National Secretaries (NS's) from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Mongolia and Taiwan decided to organize online meetings to keep having cultural exchange between members.
Following this, the East Asia NS's are honored and more than happy to invite you to our 3rd organized online meeting, which will be conducted by Taiwan, presenting Hakka Culture on May. 28th.
