Servas Korea

Servas Korea

The 5th Servas East Asia Online Meeting opened at 7:00 pm Taipei time on October 29, 2022, attracted 108 members from 5 continents and 25 countries to join. The theme of the meeting was Korea Servas Peace Riding (SPR). The SPR team leader Byungwan Choi and National Secretary of Servas Korea Sangkee Song, shared how to have cultural exchange with the world through cycling and developed public welfare activities. The Indian member Hamsavahini won the big prize of lucky draw, a ticket to the Korea K-pop Festival, valued $140.

Servas members love to travel, and many members also love outdoor activities. The Korean Peace Riding Team, organized by former National Secretary of Servas Korea, Byungwan Choi, was established in 2009. They travelled by bicycle in Korea and overseas, and have organized group cycling tours to Japan, Taiwan and even to Africa. When they cycled abroad, they contacted the local Servas members and invited local members to join them. There are currently 67 members, and 60% of the members are over 60 years old.

Servas Korea also organized public welfare cycling activities to benefit others. 700 years ago, there were 9 wars between Mongolia and South Korea. This year, SPR sponsored the second generation of Mongolian workers in Korea who were studying in South Korea to ride bicycles together. They visited the historical spots in Korea, and Servas Korea members also joined Mongolian cultural events held in Korea. From February to September, with 12 cycling trips, they realized the spirit of Servas to achieve world peace through cultural exchange and understanding.

They also went to a Mongolian restaurant, because they found that the Mongolian high school students who participated in the activity had little chance to eat Mongolian food in Korea. Korean may eat Mongolian food more often than Mongolians. In order to let these students not forget their culture, Servas Korea made this arrangement. One of the trips went to the coastline, which made Mongolian students very excited. Because Mongolia is a landlocked country, many Mongolians have never seen the sea and beaches. A total of 25 members from Servas Korea and 14 Mongolian students joined this event. This event got sponsor from the Korean government.

Servas Korea has been engaged in public welfare activities since 2008. It cooperated with other organizations and went to Myanmar to be volunteers. It also organized "deliver love and hope" to Indonesia and Bangladesh. They took photos and videos of the lives of Indonesian and Bangladeshi workers in Korea, then visited their families in their home countries, and delivered these photos and videos to the workers’ families, with stationery and gifts to their kids. Finally they took photos and videos for their families, and then delivered them to the workers in Korea.

Servas Korea is organizing a bicycle tour along the Han River in Seoul, in May next year, and members from all over the world are welcome to cycle together.
